Profiles after a Samba machine rebuild
I lost my Samba machine to a bad disk a few weeks ago, and I had to start from scratch. It was a small home machine and I didn't have backups. However, I make use of profiles and the Win2000 machine is now all screwed up -- it attempts to make new profiles for some users, with some success. If I try to set the permissions on the local Win2k machine to allow control by the user it belongs to on

Using locator() to digitise
...ext, I would be using X11 display on Linux. To pre-empt the obvious comment: I've found on the R site the suggestion to use the 'pixmap' package. I've tried this, and it works; but it involves building a big R object (the internal pixmap representation), and this chokes my somewhat puny laptop (e.g. it can take about 1 minute to draw the graphic inside a plot area using addlogo(), with mucho swappo, and subsequently working knee-deep in treacle). The following idea would be a lot slicker. For examples: I have something like a) A scatterplot of data printed in a journal (but the...

This old tune again : read performance optimisations
...nt. Netperf (TCP_SENDFILE test) gives more than 9500 Mb/s both direction, so the network hardware works OK. NFS gives the following results both in UDP and TCP modes: Sustained throughput: 490 to 520 MB/s write, 620 to 650 MB/s read. The linux CIFS client running on the same machine writes at a puny 180 MB/s and read at a miserable 75 MB/s. OK, never mind, samba is for windows clients, right? Now, the same machine rebooted under windows 7 writes at 450 MB/s, which is close enough to NFS performance, but can't top 400 MB/s reading. Read performance *should* be higher. I've played with...

Integer vs numeric
Hi the list. I do not understand the philosophy behind numeric and integer. - 1 is numeric (which I find surprising) - 2 is numeric. - 1:2 is integer. Why is that ? Christophe

[patch 0/6] Guest page hinting version 6.
Greetings, I've dedusted the guest page hinting patches and ported them to todays upstream git tree. There is one reject if applied to 2.6.24-rc5-mm1 but that is easy to fix. The code stills works as expected on my test system. Our z/VM performance team recently published a report on guest page hinting vs. the ballooner approach on SLES10 for a farm of web servers. The code on SLES10 differs

New tags for better transitions between tracks.
Hi All, I've been playing with some new metadata tags for a while and I think I'm ready to share the joy. I've set up a puny webserver at http://phippo.is-a-geek.com/mixramp.html (please don't slashdot it) with some patches to implement and use the tags. The patch for metaflac applies to the current CVS FLAC and adds the command line option --add-mix-ramp. This is a shameless rip off of the Replay Gain code and...

OpenSSH Compatiblity Problems.
Not sure which list this should go to, so I'll include both. When I SSH from a 2.9.9p2 client to a OpenSSH 2.1.1 server, it often hangs at this point. It will hang there for days on end. If I open up 9 xterms and run that command, 2-3 will login. I have no problems using ssh1 (commercial). And openssh has no problems logging into newer servers > 2.1.1. Anyone know why this might be?

multi-user * installation
Howdy! After searching around the internet and looking at countless (different) examples of how to setup Asterisk, I've been unable to locate enough to allow my puny brain to comprehend how to achieve my goal. I'm hoping some kind soul will point me in the right direction. Scenario: Multi-user asterisk installation. Each user has several sip and IAX accounts. Each user has at least one primary extension. User Goal: User #10 at ext 10 picks up phone...

Although I'm using it for my personal home use i'm sure it will be right at home in a SME without the high pricepoints for a Pillar or similar NAS solution. If you are looking for a solid NAS and those puny 2 and 4 drive boxes are not enough for you :) then you should check out the N7700. Cheers, Dean P.S. This was one of the first 50 or so to land in the country this week so you might find it hard to get your own. Also they are coming out with an rackbased version in about 2 months if you want to...

NTLMv2 and Win95 clients
Hello. I've just compiled Samba-3.0.0 on Tru-64 5.1b (AKA Digital Unix, AKA OSF) with base security (no shadow passwords) using the native compiler and GNU make. In smb.conf I'm forcing NTLMv2 only: security = user encrypt passwords = yes lanman auth = No ntlm auth = No client NTLMv2 auth = Yes client lanman auth = No

When is a site too small for Rails?
...VPS now with 160MB of RAM at rimuhosting.com, which runs me $30 a month. Say that I do quite well in my freelance business, and I get up to hosting more and more sites. Eventually I''m going to bust that amount of RAM (and the maybe the bandwidth allocation, too, as it''s puny compared to Dreamhost''s)... so it would seem that a VPS isn''t going to be viable if I want to do ALL of my sites in Rails. I''ve decided that I''ve been shortsighted in thinking I can do all of my sites in Rails. The restaurant site, right now, probably on...
