Old, slow firewall users please speak up!
Ok, I''ve flogged this issue probably longer than some of you can stand
by now. (remember, I''m the nut trying to use a PPro200 to support ~500
users on a 10Mb internet link :o)
To appease those who think I''m nuts, I am ordering a new firewall
shortly to allow for future growth. (probably a Dell PE750 with P4/2.8
and dual GE nics.)
However, since I have yet to prove that processor speed has anything
to do wit...

2.0.6pre3 and FreeBSD 3.3-RELEASE
2.0.6pre3 compiles and installs under FreeBSD 3.2-RELEASE; however, throughput
from an NT 4 SP6 workstation with domain security and only TCP_NODELAY
as a socket option is clocking around 200K/sec for large files (65MB).
Hardware is PPro200, single CPU kernel (never have gotten 2.0.5 or later
to work SMP), Adaptec 2944UW/3 Quantum 9GB Atlas II wide diff drives (clock
9MB/sec using bonnie), Intel Pro100B, full duplex 100Mbit switch between
client (PII/400 3Com905B, 128MB RAM) and server.
The behavior I'm seeing in xperfmon++ v3.0...

I''ve had much trouble with Intel E100 NIC''s. The problem can be fixed using the e100 driver instead of the eepro100 driver.
When I first saw the problem, I could avoid it by passing the network signal via an old 10Mbit/s hub - the driver seems to miss...

Finally making some progress
...10Mb link from our ISP,
along with another firewall box and proxy, we were able to determine the
problem *is* our firewall. We don''t know exactly why yet, but our sporadic
slow web access seems to have gone away since swapping a new firewall
in this morning.
The original firewall is a PPro200 with 256Mb, an Intel E100 and a DLink
DFE500 (Tulip) card. Kernel 2.4.22-37 and 2.4.22-28, but both were
compiled to remove most of the unnecessary junk, but care was taken to
include netfilter stuff needed for firewalling.
The current firewall that works is a P3/667, 768Mb, same NICs as above,...

ext3 on Linux software RAID1
Everyone,
We just had a pretty bad crash on one of production boxes and the ext2
filesystem on the data partition of our box had some major filesystem
corruption. Needless to say, I am now looking into converting the
filesystem to ext3 and I have some questions regarding ext3 and Linux
software RAID.
I have read that previously there were some issues running ext3 on a
software raid device
