OS X drops Win 2003 shares
I can mount Win 2003 shares on my Macs fine. However, the shares disappear after a while. This behavior is unlike on XP where the mounts stay attached forever. The session timeout on 2003 doesn't matter. It works that way out of the box, and after reconfiguring samba on the MAC to join the windows domain. I think it happens when the MAC goes to sleep and after waking up tries to

Samba, VPN, and Mac OSX 10.4.2
We're having an odd problem with connecting to Samba shares over a VPN with a Mac client. We have several Mac clients connecting to a Samba 3.0.10-1.fc2 installation. Prior to upgrading them to Tiger, everything worked fine both local and over an IPSec VPN. After upgrading to Tiger, they still work fine when on our LAN. But if they try to connect to a share over the VPN, Finder hangs.

Can't connect to MySQL on another machine
hi everyone I''ve got two machines here: a Powerbook and a Linux box running MySQL. The MySQL user privileges seem to be configured properly, e.g. I can connect to a database using "mysql" from the Powerbook, alter the tables etc without any problems. However, I can''t get Rails to connect to the same database. (just a simple app with one model called "Test"

general questions about R on debian/powerpc
Hi, I am about to but a laptop, and have narrowed the choices down to a Dell Latitude 600 and an Apple Powerbook G4 Aluminium (Princeton provides these models at a discount for grad students). I am biased towards the Powerbook, and would like to run Debian on it. I have only used debian on i386 platforms so far. I use R quite frequently, so I would be interested in your experience of running R

Development Environment
I want to be able to code my rails apps either on my Desktop mac or my Powerbook using textmate. I want to build a Debian server that runs lighttpd, rails and mysql. Would I use samba on the server and access the files that way through TextMate or is there something else that folks use? and should I use subversion and if so, how would I do that in the scanario I''m describing.

OT: iBook or MacBook Pro?
Well, the worm has turned and I think I may actually get an Apple ;P. But I can''t decide which one. Pros and cons: 14" iBook: + modem (for when broadband kicks out, or on the road and there''s no WIFI) + screen is probably big enough (though I currently have a 15" Dell) + doesn''t get as hot as the MacBook + almost half the cost + less likely to get stolen -

Macbook for Rails Development
Hi All, I''ve finally got fed up of struggling with Windows and am on the verge of splashing out on a Macbook for Ruby/Rails development. I''ve seen DHH''s post about it on loudthinking but I wondered if anyone else has any more wisdom... Is it worth it over a powerbook? Any tips on good OSX apps for Rails dev (textmate, i know already)? Anything not working well on

Failed to load ferret_ext.bundle on mac os x
I have found very little information about this problem on the net, so i thought someone here might be able to help me. I am running mac os x 10.4 on a powerbook and have installed ruby 1.8.6 and was trying to get ferret to work, without any success. Here is exactly what i did and what happened: $ sudo gem install ferret Updating metadata for 125 gems from http://gems.rubyforge.org

3.0.0 on RH9, throughoutput problems
...Mandrake 9.1 box, and a 1Ghz Powerbook G4. Both PCs are at least P3-500 class systems. I'm getting about 6.5-6.7MB/sec read on both systems when pulling down a several hundred MB, cached file. Write performance, at least from my Powerbook G4, is identical(I've done transfers between two powerbooks over a gigabit crossover at over 30MB/sec, so I know the powerbook can push data). When I did a crossover connection to the server, I saw occasional peaks as high as 20MB/sec read and write, but then radical drops to 1-2MB/sec or so for several seconds; it's very inconsistent. It gets bet...

Compiling R for OS X 10.2.6 (Darwin 6.6)
Our lab just picked up a G4 Powerbook (1 GHz, 1GB RAM, OS X 10.2.6). None of us have any experience with Macs but for various reasons we need to have one around for development. In any case, we've installed fink, all the Apple Developer Tools and the Dec2002updater to gcc 3.3. We're now trying to compile R 1.7.1 without too much success. First we had to get g77, which turned out to
