make index / portsdb -Uu problems
Cheers, Anyone seeing problems with the "make index" or the "portsdb -Uu" runs on 4.8-STABLE cvsupd today after 1PM CDT. Mine are quite borked up, and am trying to determine if the problems are local to my system. I have posted to the ports list earlier in the day also. Regards, Stephen Hilton nospam@hiltonbsd.com

issue with ports
my ports database seems to have become broken. I'm running -stable, but haven't rebuilt the system in a year or so (I know, security vulerabilities, but the box has been shelved in this time). anyhow, at this point, I can't do even a make clean in ports, or build portupgrade. I fetched portupgrade with pkg_add hoping that running pkgdb -F would sort things out, but it errors with: **

Is it safe to delete /bin/[ && /usr/bin/false?
Greetings, Well, I en devoured to install a copy of 7 as an effort to upgrade one of our servers. After installing a few ports, I began to notice: [: -le: argument expected messages being emitted during the configure/make process. I've already invested a fair amount of time on this upgrade, and /really/ don't want to wipe the disk(s) and start all over. This issue is not new to me - see

Memory corruption with recent kernels?
...tribble /kernel: pid 61489 (make), uid 0: exited on signal 11 (core dumped) Sep 10 17:56:29 tribble /kernel: pid 63495 (sh), uid 0: exited on signal 4 (core dumped) Sep 10 17:56:29 tribble /kernel: pid 63461 (make), uid 0: exited on signal 4 (core dumped) ... for example, this was during a run of portsdb -fUu. Now, this surely looks like flaky memory to me. Unfortunately, I can only reproduce this problem with recent kernels (messages above are from a Sept-10 update); however, I _can_ reliably trigger these problems. Rolling back to a Jul 29 kernel means these issues no longer show up. I've h...

Should I have to run make readme/index in ports after cvsup's?
/usr/ports/www/README.html went from some 200 lines to over 500 on a `make readme' in that directory just now. I thought `cvsup -g -L 2 /etc/cvsup_ports' would update the README.html files too. Should I be running `make readme' and/or `make index' (and/or anything else) myself after cvsupdating ports? -- Doug Lee dgl@dlee.org http://www.dlee.org Bartimaeus

FreeBSD Security Survey
Dear FreeBSD users and system administrators, While the FreeBSD Security Team has traditionally been very good at investigating and responding to security issues in FreeBSD, this only solves half of the security problem: Unless users and administrators of FreeBSD systems apply the security patches provided, the advisories issued accomplish little beyond alerting potential attackers to the
