Re: wine overstepping the mark?
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 The running of wine programs is not controlled by the mimetype but by a feature of the linux kernel. In /etc/init.d you might find a init script called wine. This script uses the kernel modules binfmt_misc to tell the linux kernel that when it encounters a file being executed with a special byte in the header to call it with wine. You can disable

"Smart update" utility (or coding) for data files
Hi, I am a new user of R and this is my first e-mail here. Please enlighten me on any etiquette issues I may have overstepped on. My questions is as follows: I need to do some data analysis for data from .csv files for stocks (that I have obtained from yahoo) How can I do a "smart update" of this data from Yahoo (or any other site if you wish), so that in some way, I do not have to go and download the new...

Dovecot will not run on secure kernel.
I am trying to run Dovecot on RH 7.3 with Linux kernel 2.4.20 + GrSecurity patch. I downloaded the RPM yesterday and installed it. When I start Dovecot the kernel reports: kernel: grsec: From 192.168.1.22: attempt to overstep process limit by (dovecot:14491) UID(0) EUID(0), parent (dovecot:23872) UID(0) EUID(0) I have never seen this problem in the 3 years I have used GrSecurity together with a lot of programs. GrSecurity explains: "Enforce RLIMIT_NPROC on execs. Users with a resource limit on processes will have...

Fixing some StackProtector issues
...s. The header of CaptureTracking.cpp says in part: A pointer value is captured if the function makes a copy of any part of the pointer that outlives the call. Clearly, stacks can be smashed without a "capture" occurring; a smash simply uses a pointer in a normal-looking way, but just oversteps the bounds of the pointed-to data. r363169 was intended to fix PR42238, so undoing the patch will have to come up with some other fix for PR42238. Also, there's PR40436, which identified an infinite recursion in HasAddressTaken; there's D57149 to fix that, which was abandoned as irreleva...

nlme & lme for complex mixed ANOVAs
...will not fit, using standard ANOVA. Matrix size can be determined by listing all the terms of the full model and multiplying the levels of each factor withing a term and summing all terms. I said simplified in the first paragraph above, because if I include the day of drug challenge, the model oversteps the number of within-subject factors allowed. So, surprisingly to me, Stata/SE, which I bought for large data sets, is too small! Not that I don't like Stata, but I am annoyed that I must find another tool to use. I understand that SAS Proc Mixed will compute the problem, because it may ha...

Too many open files leads to timeout exceptions in Mechanize/Net::HTTP?
I''m experiencing an issue where my get/submit calls to the Mechanize agent are leading to timeout exceptions when the ruby script has too many open file descriptors ( > 1000). However, I''m not seeing anything about an overstep violation sent anywhere to syslog, and no error message sent to stdout. The process has the large amount of open files because it''s executed by PHP from an Apache install with > 500 VHosts (with two logs for each vhost), and all of the open FD''s get inherited into the...

OFF TOPIC: "Scientific rigor proponents retract paper on benefits of scientific rigor"
This is off topic and only tangentially related to statistics or R (through "HARK"ing -- Hypothesizing After Results are Known). But given the research interests of many on this list, I thought others would enjoy it. My apologies if I have overstepped (please let me know if so). Also, PLEASE DON'T RESPOND ON THIS LIST (privately is fine). This is just FYI. I don't know whether the (short) article is pay walled, but here's the main message: "A high-profile paper about ways to improve the rigor of research papers has been ret...

Too many open files with test32
...d: (!UIDLIST_IS_LOCKED(uidlist)) The problem is not specific to this mailbox. I hadn't this problem with the stable releases and I've also not set any special limits for the dovecot processes. I'm using a grsec pathed kernel (linux 2.6.7), the kern log says: grsec: attempted resource overstep by requesting 1024 for RLIMIT_NOFILE against limit 1024 by /usr/local/libexec/dovecot/imap[imap:19114] uid/euid:1011/1011 gid/egid:448/448, parent /usr/local/sbin/dovecot[dovecot:7799] uid/euid:0/0 gid/egid:0/0 Does dovecot really need more then 1024 filedescriptors or is it a bug? If you need mo...

CentOS 4 update backlog
There are security updates upstream for CentOS (4 and 5) and it looks like the CentOS 5 ones have been rebuilt and rolled out. How come the CentOS 4 branch lags behind, or are the CentOS 5 devs different from the CentOS 4 devs? If more volunteers are needed I'm sure assistance could be offered by the CentOS community. Regards, Vandaman.

I don't have a working test suit here, so I only checked it compile on VS2008.

[PATCH 2/21] i386 Always relax segments
...ned on to support running the APM BIOS on these buggy machines. Keeping 64k limits poses very little danger to the kernel, because the pages where the APM BIOS is located will always be in low physical memory BIOS areas, which should already be marked reserved, and only buggy BIOSes would possibly overstep the segment bounds with writes to data anyway. Since forcing stricter limits breaks many machines and is not default behavior, it seems reasonable to deprecate the older code which may cause APM BIOS to fault. If you really have a badly enough broken APM BIOS that you have to turn off APM_RELAX_...
