samba backup software
...m interested in finding a native linux solution since I don't see a lot of point in having to use a Windows server with a *nix client when I'm trying to get away from Windows. If you have suggestions or are using something you are happy with, please respond. Currently, I'm evaluating Novastor's Novanet 8.5. I know there are others that I can eval, I'm just interested in finding out what others are using and happy with. Thanks. The latest version of NovaNET (http://www.novastor.com/) claims in the release notes to support ACLs. I haven't put this to the test yet, though. (I use default ACLs extensively so unless I was restoring a whole tree, files tended to get the right ACLs automagically even under the old version.) I've been reasonably happy with NovaNET, exc...

Archive attribute
Our tape backup software (run through windows) backs up items based on whether the archive attribute is set or not. If it is set, then it needs to be backed up. Then it removes the attribute. When a user modifies a file, the attribute is again set. This is how it normally works. Samba will not allow the Archive Attribute to be unchecked. Is there anyway to allow this functionality. Samba

Weird file copy
...to copy. I've set up a cron job that unloads the server, copies the files to another location and restarts the server. An hour later, the Windows backup starts up and runs successfully until it reaches this file, then it just hangs. No errors, it just stops. The backup can be cancelled, so NovaStor isn't locking up. If I exclude the file, the backup works. I don't know if it's a Samba issue, I kind of doubt it. I mostly would like to understand what is up with this. This file, lapdscd, is 2K won't copy even using Windoze Explorer. There is another file, Lapdscd, that is 5...

RE: follow-up: samba backup software
Follow up to my question for those also looking for backup solutions: Thanks for the input, it was helpful and gave me some leads. For What it's worth: I've been testing Novastor's Novanet 8.5. Pretty impressive. It has a nice GUI interface or a command line menu system, backups performed well, recognized my library without any extra effort on my part. Pricing isn't too bad either, especially compared to many of the other options. Granted I haven't donea real...

Tape operation
Hi all, My only encounter with tape-backup was with Windows 2000. With it, when we backup things using windows' backup tool, it will create a 'catalog', then the catalog contains all the backup operations we do based on date. So, with this we can "append" many backups into one tape. Next time we want to restore a backup, we can choose what date available in that
