mounting a copy of a zfs pool /file system while orginal is still active
Hello SUN gurus I do not know if this is supported, I have a created a zpool consisting of the SAN resources and created a zfs file system. Using third part software I have taken snapshots of all luns in the zfs pool. My question is in a recovery situation is there a way for me to mount the snapshots and import the pool while the original is still active. Right now all I am able to do is export

ZFS mirror to RAIDz?
Hi all, I currently have four drives in my OpenSolaris box. The drives are split into two mirrors, one mirror containing my rpool (disks 1 & 2) and one containing other data (disks 2 & 3). I''m running out of space on my data mirror and am thinking of upgrading it to two 2TB disks. I then considered replacing disk 2 with a 2TB disk and making a RAIDz from the three new drives.

how to combine grouped data and ungrouped data in a trellis xyplot
...great value in R, especially using it to generate charts, but I am still scaling the learning curve in a number of ways. I am looking plot one grouped line and one ungrouped line in a lattice plot. I can plot one grouped line like this (the line's color in each panel becomes dependent on the newpool value): xyp<-xyplot(cpucap~date|zone,data=df,type="l",groups=newpool,auto.key=list(points=F,lines=T), main=paste(df$server[1]," CPU Caps\n",df$date[1]," to ",df$date[nrow(df)],sep="") ) print(xyp) and I can plot two ungrouped lines...

suggestion: directory promotion to filesystem
Not sure how technically feasible it is, but something I thought of while shuffling some files around my home server. My poor understanding of ZFS internals is that the entire pool is effectivly a tree structure, with nodes either being data or metadata. Given that, couldnt ZFS just change a directory node to a filesystem with little effort, allowing me do everything ZFS does with filesystems on

Removing non existent pool
I grabbed a spare disc to make a root mirror with and it happened to have an old rpool from another installation on it. Anyway, it also seemed to have an EFI label, so I removed the partition, re-labeled it to SMI and created a Solaris II partition etc and made my mirror. While importing a pool from another controller''s set of discs, I noticed an `rpool import` enumerated the old rpool

libguestfs mounting solaris 10 ZFS guest
...I have fuse installed and zfs-fuse and I can create ZFS filesystems on the physical host machine. Just really not sure how to make libguestfs deal with it. I have tried mounting the pool and the underlying virtual disk device with no success. # guestmount -o modules=zfs -a /dev/kvmVG00/sol10u6 -m newpool/ROOT/s10up-08 --ro /mnt libguestfs: error: mount_options: mount_options_stub: newpool/ROOT/s10up-08: expecting a device name # guestmount -o modules=zfs -a /dev/kvmVG00/sol10u6 -m /dev/dsk/c0d0s0 --ro /mnt libguestfs: error: mount_options: mount_options_stub: /dev/dsk/c0d0s0: No such file or direc...

ZFS import on pool with same name?
I have an OpenSolaris snv_101 box with ZFS on it. (Sun Ultra 20 M2) zpool name is rpool. The I have a 2nd hard drive in the box that I am trying to recover the ZFS data from (long story but that HD became unbootable after installing IPS on the machine) Both drives have a pool named "rpool", so I can''t import the rpool from the 2nd drive. root at hyperion:~# zpool status

zpool(1M): import -a?
My copies of zpool(1M) have three entries for zpool import: zpool import [-d dir] [-D] zpool import [-d dir] [-D] [-f] [-o opts] [-R root] pool | id [newpool] zpool import [-d dir] [-D] [-f] [-a] Shouldn''t the last one be zpool import [-d dir] [-D] [-f] -a ? That is, if the -a is optional, how can we tell the difference between it and the first version? David

How to rename rpool. Is that recommended ?
Hello, I have a situation where a host, which is booted off its ''rpool'', need to temporarily import the ''rpool'' of another host, edit some files in it, and export the pool back retaining its original name ''rpool''. Can this be done ? Here is what I am trying to do: # zpool import -R /a rpool temp-rpool # zfs set mountpoint=/mnt

ZFS recovery tools
Hi, I have just recovered from a ZFS crash. During the antagonizing time this took, I was surprised to learn how undocumented the tools and options for ZFS recovery we''re. I managed to recover thanks to some great forum posts from Victor Latushkin, however without his posts I would still be crying at night... I think the worst example is the zdb man page, which all it does is to ask you

Storage administration and refactoring of domain admin
This pair of patches provide a new storage admin interface. Then, on top of that, it refactors the domain administration pieces to now properly use storage pools and volumes when defining a new VM.

Get your SXCE on ZFS here!
With the release of the Nevada build 90 binaries, it is now possible to install SXCE directly onto a ZFS root filesystem, and also put ZFS swap onto a ZFS filesystem without worrying about having it deadlock. ZFS now also supports crash dumps! To install SXCE to a ZFS root, simply use the text-based installer, after choosing "Solaris Express" from the boot menu on the DVD. DVD download

Motherboard for home zfs/solaris file server
Hello, I am building a home file server and am looking for an ATX mother board that will be supported well with OpenSolaris (onboard SATA controller, network, graphics if any, audio, etc). I decided to go for Intel based boards (socket LGA 775) since it seems like power management is better supported with Intel processors and power efficiency is an important factor. After reading several

Text-based node administration tool
This patch obsoletes any previous ones. This is an upstream candidate, so I'm looking for feedback so we can push this and start using it.
