Problem with client login in 1.2.17

I have the following in the .conf file
auth_verbose=yes
auth_debug=yes
auth_debug_passwords=yes
mail_debug=yes
verbose_ssl=yes
Also note the following differences in behaviour between Dovecot 1.0.7 and 1.2.17
