Why doesn't my wins.dat list all the LMBs?
...-->linux samba | linux WINS linux mswin client<-----LNB I wanted to know which boxes were the LMBs and the DMB, so I looked into the wins.dat on the WINS server. But in wins.dat, I only see one line that has MSBROWSE in it: "^A^B__MSBROWSE__^B#01" 1066639333 255.255.255.255 e4R Is this supposed to be the DMB? Why the 255.255.255.255 address? I would expect there to be a host address there. Why aren't the LMBs listed in this file? The actual LMBs can be found by running nmblookup on the...

Is wins.dat supposed to list all LMB, or just the DMB?

Question about command line tools.
Hello. I have searched net for this information and I could find solution for my problems. I'm writing a perl script which searches local network for computers with windows shares. I have done this by executing nmblookup -M -- - From this command I get a list of computer (by ip) with MSBROWSE. Then I'm using smbclient command to get shares from every ip. I have one problem to solve. How I can check if share needs password and user ? Which command tool use to examine if shares need authentication. Now I use mount option with user=% it works for servers without password. If mount is n...

Remote subnet browsing using Samba for WINS.
...fied I am not getting any errors in nmbd.log or smbd.log even with a log level of 2. I have verified that there are in fact 2 copies of nmbd running when they should be and that they started without posting any errors to the syslog. I have verified that there is 1 computer on either subnet with a MSBROWSE in the NBTSTAT -a indicating that there is a LMB (local master browser) for each subnet. I can ping everything from everything else. The DMB (domain master browser) does show a workgroup 1B in the nbtstat -a. I have waited longer than 2 hours to insure that the systems have time to communicate t...

Windows LMB and Samba DMB problems.
...pear in BROWSE.DAT or WINS.DAT. Everything is pointed to the Samba box for WINS. Everything does have NetBIOS over TCP/IP enabled. I've waited over 10 hours in my attempts to no avail. Both the boxes are on the same subnet I've done a 'nbtstat -a' on the MS 2KAS box and it does have MSBROWSE listed. Further, if I make the Samba box the DMB and the LMB it works great. Populated the Network Neighborhood REALLY fast. However at this point, I'm not asking an MS box to be the LMB. Which leads me to the next problem: My whole reason for testing this, is that I wanted to install a VPN o...

cross-subnet browsing problems
I'm trying to set up cross-subnet browsing using Samba on a Linux box and a Sparc UltraEnterprise with Win95 and NT Workstation clients. I'm using the Sparc as the domain master and also as the WINS server on the 108 subnet. The Linux box is the local master on the 46 subnet. Both are running Samba 1.9.17alpha4. I can see the conversation between the two samba servers and the browse
