Impossible to IPfilter this?
...I
maintain. But I want to secure my firewall against the other side being
taken over, so this does not help me here.
Any hints how to resolve this are welcome. I don't think this is a
general IPFilter problem, hence I'm asking on this mailing list rather
than that for IPFilter.
Thank you,
Lupe Christoph
PS: There was talk about the sequence IPFW/IPNat/IPFilter get invoked.
It would be interesting to put the IPSec code in this picture. Are
IPSec packets going through *any* of them? With/out GIF?

Autoconfigure miss on Solaris 8 x86 (2.3.0p1)
...h OpenSSH.
BIND's bitypes.h defines only the unsigned types, so the second
test fails, and then the first compilation during 'make' fails
because of a redefinition of u_int*_t.
I'd recommend to separate the tests for the signed and the
unsigned types.
Thanks for the great package!

IPSec delays
I've been using IPSec and racoon alot lately creating tunnels between FreeBSD machines. Everything works as it should once I've got it running. I do however seem to get delays when one, or both ends of the tunnel drop or are rebooted. On reboot, once the machine starts racoon, it takes two or three minutes for the tunnel to come back up. If I stop and restart racoon, it takes only 60

Darkstat
Hi all,
please, tell me about security of Darkstat. Is it good idea to install it on
firewall/gateway ?
I'd like to measure our company traffic, but I do not have Apache running on
the gateway. How could I redirect Darkstat's output to web-server inside
company ?
Or is there some other tool, which can measure in/out traffic and send
output to another machine ? I know MRTG, but it uses

Hacked or not appendice
Hi all again,
I must add, there are no log entries after June 9, 2004. "LKM" message first
apeared June 8, 2004, after this day, there is nothing in /var/messages,
/var/security .....
How could I look for suspicious LKM module ? How could I find it, if the
machine is hacked and I can not believe "ls", "find" etc. commands ?

Kernel-loadable Root Kits
Thanks for the module, I think its a good idea to commit it to FreeBSD
for a few reasons:
1) Some folks just prefer more static kernels.
2) Securelevel is a great thing, but can be a pain to do upgrades around
remotely. [A lot of folks use FreeBSD simply because its a breeze to run
remotely].
3) Until someone writes code to add modules to a kernel via /dev/mem and
releases it to the script

General Security Issues
Greetings list,
As a newbie to security I would like to ask any recommendation that the list
might have.
We are about to "install" a new box with 4.9 stable to the nice and innocent
internet world. :-P
The box has no services running expect apache and we telnet to it via SSH.
Main function of this box will be graphing various interfaces via rrdtool.
So, I would like to ask if there is

Fwd: (KAME-snap 9012) racoon in the kame project
FYI, looks like support for Racoon is ending. Does anyone have any

access denied with samba share
Hello Samba group,
Problem:
I cannot get samba share to grant access to my /shared
share. I created it, gave the linux user permissions
and tested them, my Windows XP Pro sees the share, I
can map a drive to it, but I cannot change to it:
Access denied is the error I get. I'm logged into
Windows XP as the same user ID and password as on the
Linux system.
I had a problem when accessing the

Multi-User Security
Hello list.
I would like to get your opinion on what is a safe multi-user environment.
The scenario:
We would like to offer to some customers of ours some sort of network
backup/archive. They would put daily or weekly backups from their local
machine on our server using rsync and SSH. Therefore, they all have a user
account on our server. However, we must ensure that they would absolutely

Hacked or not ?
Hi,
I have a 4.9-STABLE FreeBSD box apparently hacked!
Yesterday I ran chkrootkit-0.41 and I don't like some of the outputs.
Those are:
chfn ... INFECTED
chsh ... INFECTED
date ... INFECTED
ls ... INFECTED
ps ... INFECTED
But all the rest is NOT PROMISC, NOT INFECTED, NOTHING FOUND, NOTHING DELETED, or NOTHING DETECTED.
I know by the FreeBSD-Security archives that

...re (or deinstalling Panda) helped.
It seems that the error exists at least since version 3.02.04, which is
called "Titanium 2004".
Because this is an older thread, I include both previous messages.
Please excuse me if this should violate any rules.

What happened with portaudit?
Hello,
One of my machines I got a report about 3 vulnerable packages (php4,
ruby, openssl) in tomorrows security run output, but in today's security
run output all of them disappeared, but nobody upgraded or removed the
affected packages. I reinstalled portaudit, refreshd its database, but
now it reports 0 affected pakages. The pkg_info command lists that three
packages, so they are

Port scan from Apache?
Hi everyone,
today I got an e-mail from a company claiming that my server is doing
port scans on their firewall machine. I found that hard to believe so I
started checking the box.
The company rep told me that the scan was originating at port 80 with
destination port 8254 on their machine. I couldn't find any hints as to
why that computer was subject to the alleged port scans. Searching
