[Flac-users] FLAC/LPAC/Bzip2 better for archival?
...rage space on my linux box. So I am trying to decide what audio compression scheme to use for my collection of audio tapes (recordings of one speaker, preaching in an church auditorium, recorded with low-grade mics and tape decks) converted to digital audio (16bit, stereo, WAV, 44100Hz). Is FLAC, LPAC, or a standard data compression format better for compressing this type of audio for long-term storage/archival purposes? Thanks for your help.
Sincerely,
Dan

Difficult sample for vorbis w/ audible artifacts
...n from here:
http://www.animus-facticius.org
drone_clip.zip is a 9 second clip of the track where the artifact is most
apparent, drone_short.pac is a 1 minute clip of track. The sample is from
the song "Drone" from "Autechre - Peel Session". The longer clip is
compressed with LPAC which can be found here:

Basically, what happens is when encoding this file at lower bitrates with
vorbis beta 4 there is some very bad pre-echo on the sharp attacks. I have
been told that pre-echo handling is still being worked on though so mayb...

Monkey Audio Open Source?

that would be great... the list of usable OS audio codecs
is pretty small and more sharing of ideas would be good.
but I don't think it's going to happen. both lpac and
mac guys have said this before and it never comes to pass.
I think the idea of publishing the secret sauce recipe must
be too painful.

bitrtate peeling and lossless compression
I just read some of the discussion on the list about 'bitrate peeling' and
remembered an interview of Monty that I have read recently. In it he says
that Vorbis uses MCDTs <sp> and that these are theoretically reversable.
And now, I learn that theoretically we can use bitrate peeling to make
smaller files from larger ones, and that leads to my question. Could I
theoretically

horn.wav - there's still a small amount of noise/fluttery added. Maybe
the bitrate is too low? (59kbps)
glitch.wav - high-frequency glitch in the left channel when the
cymbals are hit (at 0:03s). You can get this file from here:

(it is packed with LPAC).

Pre-echo like noises on Beta4
Hi, there.
Although I'm not a hacker at all, I noticed an audible noise on Beta
4 encoded files. So, I'd like to report it here.
I ripped and encoded 'A Day Without Rain' on the album with the same
name By Enya into Vorbis using Oggenc and Oggdrop Beta 4 from the Vorbis
site. (You know, she is quite an encoder-killer.) At all the bitrates,
files encoded by Oggdrop had audible

Updated OggDrop ?
Are the ogg/vorbis programs updated to v1.0.1 ?
OggDrop for example ?

Open Source Compression
I thought some here may find this interesting... There has been
discussion in Monkey's Audio forum about creating a new open source format
for lossless audio compression with the intent of creating a *standard* for
lossless compression, similar to what Xiph is trying to do with Ogg Vorbis.
Some have even been tossing around the idea of trying to work in conjunction
with Xiph on this, and a
