Possible VFS KPI and KBI breakage on stable/7
...hetic filesystems introduces new VOP, vop_vptocnp. This would allow procstat(1) to work on devfs and pseudofs vnodes. As I understand, this would also improve Gnome experience on FreeBSD. All fs modules need to be recompiled. There was one very magisterial voice that objected against KBI breakage on stable branch in principle. In my opinion, the benefits of the bug fixes and functionality improvements with the proposed merges are much greater then inconvenience of the need to recompile out-of-tree fs modules. Changes were discussed with re@ to some extent. In case there is vocal o...

nullfs changes MFC
...hancements due to use of the shared locks for lookups if the lower layer supports it, much better caching on the nullfs layer, and proper handling of the text segments on the nullfs. Also, it should improve the error recovery and some corner cases with locking. Unfortunately, the merge would break KBI for VFS, since it needs 5 new VOP slots, and only three spares are left. We already are very liberal with the VFS KBI, so I do not feel that the merge is not acceptable, due to the benefits it brings to the nullfs. The merge is available at http://people.freebsd.org/~kib/misc/nullfs_9.1.patch ---...

stopping amd causes a freeze
Occasionally stopping amd freezes my system. It's a rare occurrence, and I haven't found a reliable way to reproduce it. It's also a real freeze, so there's no way to get into the debugger or grab a core dump. I only can perform the 4 seconds hard shutdown to revive the system. I run amd through sysutils/automounter, which is a scripting solution that generates an amd.map file

Upcoming ABI Breakage in RELENG_7
Normally the FreeBSD Project tries very hard to avoid ABI breakage in "Stable Branches". However occasionally the fix for a bug can not be implemented without ABI breakage, and it is decided that the fix warrants the impact of the ABI breakage. We have one of those situations coming along for RELENG_7 (what will become FreeBSD 7.1). The ABI breakage should only impact kernel modules

The first release candidate of the 9.1-RELEASE release cycle is now available on the FTP servers for amd64, i386, and powerpc64. The MD5/SHA256 checksums are at the bottom of this message. The ISO images and, for architectures that support it, the memory stick images are available here: ftp://ftp.freebsd.org/pub/FreeBSD/releases/ISO-IMAGES/9.1/ (or any of the FreeBSD mirror sites). Printing Issues with NT type Clients.
Hi. To begin with, I have a freshly built RedHat Linux 8.0 box running samba 2.2.8a. The kernel version is 2.4.18-14. I downloaded and compiled samba from source. I am using LPRng-3.8.9-6 as my printing system. The attached printer is a Lexmark Z22 printer and it is attached to the parralel port. Problem: For the life of me, I can't get NT type clients, NT4, 2K and XP to print to samba.

Rebuild of kernel 2.6.9-67.0.20.EL failure
Hello list. I'm trying to rebuild the 2.6.9.67.0.20.EL kernel, but it fails even without modifications. How did I try it? Created a (non-root) build environment (not a mock ) Installed the kernel.scr.rpm and did a rpmbuild -ba --target=`uname -m` kernel-2.6.spec 2> prep-err.log | tee prep-out.log The build failed at the end: Processing files: kernel-xenU-devel-2.6.9-67.0.20.EL Checking
