Where does xen chache domUs grub.conf ?
Hi all, I''m a newbie on this list. I''m using xen 3.0.3 on CentOS50. I installed a new flavor of kernel in a domU via a standard RPM, which modified my grub.conf by adding a new entry to boot on the new kernel. When rebooting the domU by pygrub, I didn''t see the new grub entry. I tried to restart xend, with no effect. By googling a little, I understood that kernel

LVM+Xen+FreeNAS possible?
Hi All, We''ve limitation of 500 GB per server as per ServerLoft. we are needing to store word/pdf files. We are planning to use following setup. /dev/sda1 - boot - ext2 /dev/sda2 - swap /dev/sda3 - dom0 - ext3 /dev/sda4 - LVM - one LV for each domU, We''re planning 3 DomUs. /dev/sda5 - FreeNAS. Is that possible? Can it be in one of the LVs under 4th partition? Currently, one

XEN and clustering?
Hi. I''m using Xen on RHEL cluster, and I have strange problems. I gave raw volumes from storage to Xen virtual machines. With windows, I have a problem that nodes don''t see the volume as same one.... for example: clusternode1# clusvcadm -d vm:winxp clusternode1# dd if=/dev/mapper/winxp of=/node1winxp clusternode2# dd if=/dev/mapper/winxp of=/node2winxp clusternode3# dd

Xen and I/O Intensive Loads
Hi, folks, I''m attempting to run an e-mail server on Xen. The e-mail system is Novell GroupWise, and it serves about 250 users. The disk volume for the e-mail is on my SAN, and I''ve attached the FC LUN to my Xen host, then used the "phy:/dev..." method to forward the disk through to the domU. I''m running into an issue with high I/O wait on the box (~250%)

xen, iscsi and resilience to short network outages
Hi. Here is the short version: If dom0 experiences a short (< 120 second) network outage the guests whose disks are on iSCSI LUNs get (seemingly) unrecoverable IO errors. Is it possible to make Xen more resiliant to such problems? And now the full version: We''re testing Xen on iSCSI LUNs. The hardware/software configuration is: * Dom0 and guest OS: SLES10 x86_64 * iSCSI LUN on

rsync and missing files?
...the manpage and the docs on the website, but I haven't found anything (ie, --partial and --ignore-errors) that have any effect. This has gotta be something that people run into all the time, but does anyone have a solution? John -- John Madden UNIX Systems Engineer Ivy Tech State College jmadden@ivy.tec.in.us

Xen SAN Questions
Hello Everyone, I recently had a question that got no responses about GFS+DRBD clusters for Xen VM storage, but after some consideration (and a lot of Googling) I have a couple of new questions. Basically what we have here are two servers that will each have a RAID-5 array filled up with 5 x 320GB SATA drives, I want to have these as useable file systems on both servers (as they will both be

SMB Shares with subversion backing store
To all, I was wondering if it was possible to setup samba shares that use subversion as a backing store for the files. Whenever a new file is created it is added to the subversion tree, whenever a file is opened it is checked out of the subversion tree, and whenever it is deleted it is removed from the subversion tree. The idea is that one could use subversion to retain previous versions of

Shared SAN disk LUN between 2 servers and migration problem
HI Dom0 is CentOS 5.2, 64-bit, Xen version 3.2.1 and 3.2.2. I got Fiber SAN disk system and 2 servers and i am making shared LUN available to both servers. Then i got multipath layer running on both Dom0s and so Xen is seeing device-mapper file, instead of two /dev/sdX devices, then i have setup Xen domU (HVM Windows 2003) using /dev/mapper/sharedLUN as physical storage to my windows server.

rsync as a backup solution
I would like to get some opinions on a backup method using rsync. I already have a script written to mirror the data over to a backup script from a cron that is run every night. I've also been tempted to use the "--delete" option to keep everything up to date on the backup server. However, this is probably a bad idea in the event my data is deleted from the "/home"

Xen and iSCSI - options and questions
Hello, I have a small Xen farm of 8 dom0 servers with 64 virtual machines running para-virtualized and this has been working great. Unfortunately, I''ve hit a limit: my iSCSI hardware supports only 512 concurrent connections and so I''m pretty much at the limit. (Wish I would have seen that problem sooner!) Of course, 87% of those connections are idle-- but necessary because I

Xen network tune for fileserver in DomU
Hello, gentlemen I need wise advice about how to tune  network for performance usage file server under domU I use bridged network. On dom0 network settings are: auto eth0 iface eth0 inet static address 192.168.1.100 netmask 255.255.255.0 network 192.168.1.0 broadcast 192.168.1.255 up /etc/xen/scripts/network-bridge start bridge=br0 netdev=eth0 up ifconfig br0 up #up route add default gw

High Number of VMs
Hi, I''m curious about how you guys deal with big virtualization installations. To this date we only dealt with a small number of VM''s (~10)on not too big hardware (2xquad xeons+16GB ram). As I''m the "storage guy" I find it quite convenient to present to the dom0s one LUN per VM that makes live migration possible but without the cluster file system or cLVM

On an eight cpu system domU ''cap'' can only be set to 100
On a 8 Core system only dom0 can set cap > 100 and vcpus > 1. On a domU ''xm sched-credit -d <domU> -c 200'' says "Error: cap is out of range". Vcpu cannot be set higher than 1 - regardless of boot/config/command line. Low performance is equivalent to the cap setting. See ''xm list --long'': (domain (domid 0) (uuid

best practices in using shared storage for XEN Virtual Machines and auto-failover?
Hi all, Can anyone pleas tell me what would be best practice to use shared storage with virtual machines, especially when it involved high availability / automated failover between 2 XEN servers? i.e. if I setup 2x identical XEN servers, each with say 16GB RAM, 4x 1GB NIC''s, etc. Then I need the xen domU''s to auto failover between the 2 servers if either goes down (hardware
