Very general Gibbs point process models can be fitted to point pattern data using a function ppm similar to lm or glm. Models may include dependence on covariates, interpoint interaction and dependence on marks. Fitted models can be simulated automatically. Worm distribution :-)
You are talking about random point patterns, since the glow-worms appear as ``stars'' (= points). See the package ``spatial'' (which comes with R) and try simulating a pattern using Strauss(). Or install the package ``spatstat'' from CRAN --- in this package there is a variety of ways to simulate ``regular'' random point patterns --- rMaternI, rMaternII, rSSI,

distances from points to line
Dear all, I have discovered that there are many things that I used to do in my GIS which are easily done directly in R, for example calculating interpoint distances using geoR and pick out points inside a polygon using splancs. I now wonder, is there a function to create a line object like a watercourse and then calculate the distances between many points in space and this line? I couldn't find it in geoR, splancs, spatial or RArcInfo. Thanks...
