Slow Samba transfer
...data is stored.
I normally access data from Windows (mostly Seven) machines connected
either via ethernet GB hub (but some machines are 100MB) or via WLan(N).
Problem is throughput is generally low (about 1 mb/s) and, for really
big files (> 1Gb) it drops with time going to the range of few hunderd kb/s.
Transferring a 4Gb file takes HOURS.
I do not believe it's normal, is it?
I started with the plain wheezy-provided setup and tried to improve it
following several advices found around the net, but I did not see any
difference.
Things I tried are:
strict allocate = yes

0.24.0 opening excessive TCP connections
I created ticket 961 "puppetd create too many/not closing TCP
connections".
I''m wondering if anyone else is seeing this? Depending on the client
configuration a typical puppetd run will cause hunderds of simultaneous
TCP connections to be opened
to the puppet master. I''m gettting over 300 established connections for a
single client in some cases. If the number of open sockets exceeds the
maximum number of open files limit (see "ulimit -n") then further
connections fail to...

hundreds of thousands files
I am rsyncing several hunderds of thousands of files in several
directories. The way I got rsync to work for me was I wrote a script
which NFS mounts the directory I am rsyncing first before starting, and
then it goes through the directories and rsyncs them in bite sizeable
chunks by going a few directories deep and starting t...

not always making hard links?
I'm using 2.6.3pre1 to transfer a rather large Debian archive
(126GB, more than 30 million files). It contains about 450 daily
snapshots, where unchanged files are hardlinked between the snapshots
(so many files have hunderds of links).
It's been running for some time now, and I found that while it's far
from done, it's already used 165GB on the receiving end. Investigation
shows that hardlinked files are no longer hardlinked...
Any ideas why?
Debugging may prove a bit problematic, as it takes a _long_ tim...

how to count the network flow of samba in linux server
...ac-ng which use iptables to count. But the port in the server is ranged when a client connect to it.
so I first need to get the port and then add iptables rule in real time when a new client connect the server.
if so,the iptables rules become much, and when a packet come in or get out ,it will match hunderds of rules first,
the stability of the server looks bleak.
So,can you give me some advices about this?
Thanks so much.

Use of qcdisc+htb
Hi folks.
This message may be a bit verbose and not as techie as the ones I''ve
seen in this list, but describing the scenario will save a lot of
messages.
Scenario:
A building with 17 floors, each floor with 24 offices (totals 408
offices) connected to the backbone through a border switch (1 vlan for
each office). The offices can lease bandwidth of 64k, 128k, 256k,
512k, 1M and 2Mbps,

A probably silly thought but...
Not a silly thought.
I've instead of spending x hunderd thousand on brandname ibm servers and
sans, how you could create a RAID array of PCs running IDE hard drives.
If a PC dies just plug in some more and rebuild. If you want to add
more space just add more PCs. :) that would be cool.
Obviously you wouldn't use it still for critical data l...

Add a public ssh key form node A to authorized keys on node B
With the risc I ask a queston answered a hunderd times before (which I
couldn''t find)...
On node A I want to create a ssh key. For this I exec a ssh-keygen. Now I
want the generated public key added to the authorized key file of node B.
Probably I need the ssh_authorized_key resource for this. But then I need
the public key of node...

Extracting files from OVA is bad
...ry directory and processed
afterwards. Under normal situation user can have up to three copies of
the VM on his drive at the end of import:
* original OVA,
* temporary extracted files (will be deleted when virt-v2v terminates,
* converted VM.
This is not a good idea for large VMs that have hunderds of GBs or even
TBs in size. The requirements on the necessary storage space can be
lessened with proper partitioning. I.e. source OVA and converted VM
don't end up on the same drive and TMPDIR is set to put even temporary
files somewhere else. But this is not a general solution. And sometimes...

How to keep idmapping, when Samba servers becomes part of a Windows AD from a larger organisation.
Hi
Since 2006, I used in my departement a Samba solutions based on NT4 style PDC, 2 BDCs and some files servers, desserving one hunderd persons. The backends for passwords and idd are a master and two slave openldap. Now i have to integrate a much larger organisation, an University Hospital, running with Windows AD. For political reasons, I should not maintain DCs anymore, but I will still maintain Windows stations, Linux stati...

Rsync resource consumption, whilst building a large file list
I need to rsync a large collection of files (images) that number in the
1000's. We have 2 repositories, one was mass-copied recently, the other
has since had updates performed. The initial copy took over 5 hours to
complete ;-) What we want is only to update the destination (old) copy
with newer files, delete anything that shouldn't be there.
What I'm trying to determine is

A Practical Question.
I've written a few times, but haven't seen any
responses, so please forgive me if this has been
answered.
How many max users can be served by IceCast?
We can't seem to serve more than 40 users at a time
and I have no idea what to do at this point.
Any suggestions?
This is what everything is set to:
max_clients 100
max_clients_per_source 100
max_sources 5
max_admins 5

Scaling Puppet 0.22.1 to hunderdes of nodes.
Hi,
My environment is composed of ~250 workstations hitting a single
puppetmaster server, which has been working fairly well up until now.
The most recent change has been a migration of a lot of remote file copy
objects which were previously handled with cfengine.
client side puppetd calls to the puppetmaster.getconfig method are
taking unreasonably long, on the order of 2-3 minutes. It

Slow header fetching rate over nfs mailspool.
We are setting up a Dovecot over a pair of NFS which mirrored with DRBD
+Heartbeat,
under Debian Etch AMD64 with Kernel 2.6.22-5.
The problem was slow header downloading rate. We had tried to use
postal to inject 500 emails which are under 5KB each,
but when ever we start up Mail.app, Thunderbird or even OE6, the
header download rate is terrible slow.
Its look like a few sec for just 1

Other possible solutions to: rsync memory usage, paid feature request
Hi, Matthew --
Regarding your message of 05-Jul-2005 concerning rsync memory usage
(sorry that I am not directly replying to it; I am not as yet subscribed
to the list and my mailer doesn't allow me to hard-code an In-Reply-To

While I applaud anyone who wants to encourage open-source development,

managing users from smbpasswd rather than /etc/passwd
I have samba installed on a web server (behind a firewall). It's working
fine with all the WINS networking here (eg, password authentication from
the NT servers, etc).
I (we) want this web server - a linux redhat 5.x box currently running
samba-1.9.18p8 - to have as few actual unix login accounts as possible.
What I want/need to do is to allow LOTS of people in the faculty here
