based on the Marvell 88SE6480 chipset? It''s a true PCI Express 8 port JBOD
SAS/SATA controller with pricing apparently around $125.
If it works with OpenSolaris it sounds pretty much perfect.

have found the problem: it's a Caviar Green, meant for a desktop, and the
controller in the server has issues, because it uses TLER:

In short, if it hits an error, it can take, in extreme cases, up to two
min to recover; meanwhile, a RAID or HBA controller has hissy fits if it
takes more than 7 or 15 seconds.

Apparent SAS HBA failure-- now what?
My setup: A SuperMicro 24-drive chassis with Intel dual-processor
motherboard, three LSI SAS3081E controllers, and 24 SATA 2TB hard drives,
divided into three pools with each pool a single eight-disk RAID-Z2. (Boot
is an SSD connected to motherboard SATA.)
