How to properly install VLC?
Hi all,
My colleagues and friends from time to time send me .wmv files and I'd
like to be able to view them under CentOS.
VLC was recommended to me, and AFAIR about a half year ago I tried
installing it. I don't remember the exact details, but I do remember
that the Red Hat and Fedora binary distributions didn't work without
giving all sorts of errors. I _think_ I then did a

Audio CD problem on laptop VGN-SZ61MN
Is there anyone out there who has installed FreeBSD on the above Sony
laptop ?
Both ''cat filename > /dev/dsp0.0'' or ''vlc cdda:///dev/acd0@1 are OK.
If I run ''cdcontrol -f /dev/acd0 play'', there is no sound.
But the output of ''cdcontrol -f /dev/acd0 status audio'' is alright.
(same behaviour for cd0 instead of acd0)
And the output

MPEG video under Fedora 9
Could some kind soul state as briefly and clearly as possible
what is required to play a .mpg video file under Fedora 9/KDE/Firefox?
On my laptop I see from System Settings=>Advanced=>File Associations
that I am given a choice for mpeg video files of
GXine Video Player
Gnome MPlayer
MPlayer
Movie Player
Kaffeine
As a sample .mpg file I've taken
/usr/share/apps/k3b/extra/k3bphotosvcd.mpg .
[Maybe that is a bad example;
if so could some guru suggest a better one?

Swfdec and Ffmpeg only
...founder and still very active developer of Puppy Linux, and a
variant named Quirky. Puppy is a cut-down distro, typically 100MB
live-CD. We have always used the Adobe Flash player, though I have
stayed with the Flash 9 player (9.0.48.0) due to its smaller size.
Puppy also has ffmpeg, xine-lib and gxine.
Recently I have been experimenting with Swfdec and Swfdec-mozilla. I
started with the latest stable releases and Gstreamer, but I could
only get Flash videos to play the video, no sound.
However, I don't want Gstreamer, it's too big. Ffmpeg alone has become
extremely capable. The 'ff...

VLC and playing .mkv files with opus audio
Hi list,
I use VLC from nux-dextop as my default player.
Recently began using youtube-dl and it grabs the video and audio just
fine and produces .mkv files.
I can play the resulting file just fine with Enqueue in SMPlayer, GXine,
SMPlayer and Videos -
VLC unfortunately says 'VLC could not decode the format "Opus"'
Yet my google search indicates this issue was solved many releases ago -
2.0.4 and CentOS 7 is at version 2.2.2-4.el7
Anyone else have this problem and/or ideas on how to get it going?
TIA

A thank you and question about the cortado jar
...ively at home (CentOS) - multimedia has always been a
sore spot. Flash often works but can be quite quirky, even skipping and
displaying weird artifacts when I let the video completely buffer (which
does not happen with Windows flash plugin). The totem mozilla plugin
broke with FireFox 3.x. the gxine plugin does not embed. The mplayer
plugin sometimes takes the browser down.
The native support for Theora though is extremely good, it even
performed fairly well on my old low memory Thinkpad T20.
Your high quality video codec and the new media tags that browsers are
adopting make multimedia e...

New addition to FAQ
Greetings,
I was on IRC about 7 hours ago and suggested that the FAQ be updated slightly.
Rather than sit on my ass and complain I figured I'd ask a few people, and see
if the idea was worth the time.
Here's what Ive started with:
http://www.dimension.net.nz/theora.html
I'll be adding to it over the next 24 hours - mostly in the area of Playback
and Encoding.
Just threw it together
