Fraunhoffer claims patents on other formats
Here in the uk, to get a patent on anything, you have to prove that the patent is not obvious and that there is no prior art. If there is prior art, then a patent cannot be given, this is why people patenting stuff have to keep it a secret until they actually have the patent, otherwise it is considered to have been released into the public domain. Once something is in the public domain, nobody

Compiling Asterisk with G.723.1
Hello, I am relatively new to Asterisk and I need to compile the G.723.1 codec for Asterisk. I downloaded the ITU source code, placed it in the codecs directory, but apparently Asterisk needs a rather different library than the one provided from ITU. As I've seen in the mailing list archives, there are quite a few users who were able to compile G.723.1 in *, so, could someone kindly share it

mp3 inventors were awarded with "German Future Price"
...0/ and here's the official homepage of the price: http://www.deutscher-zukunftspreis.de/dzp00_02/dzp00_02.html It's all in German, so I give a summary here: "The price of the German President for Technics and Innovation has been arwarded to the inventors of mp3, namely 3 people from Fraunhoffer's: Prof-Dr. Prof. Karlheinz Brandenburg, Dipl.-Ing. Bernhard Grill and Dipl.-Ing. Harald Popp." Another Fraunhoffer guy says: "We have always asked ourselves if we can win the race against the rest of the world. But we worked hard and we were always a bit better than our competitor...

Should FLAC join Xiph?
...ys to go BSD. But to go forward I need, at a minimum, the go-ahead from libFLAC contributors in the AUTHORS file. At the same it would be nice if the majority of users were warm and fuzzy too. As for making money licensing, I never had any intention to (and still don't). Nobody but M$/Dolby/Fraunhoffer/etc. can get away with that. I wouldn't mind contracting out but a codec has to be popular before that happens anyway. Overall the answer to the question has been "yes", especially after clearing up that FLAC won't be tied only to Ogg. We'll see how it goes as the discuss...

Hz vs bitrate?
the Vorbis FAQ says: "mid to high quality (8kHz-48.0kHz, 16+ bit, polyphonic) audio and music at fixed and variable bitrates from 16 to 128 kbps/channel." What is the difference between Hz and bitrate? Doesn't MP3 support higher bitrates? Pointers for more reading are welcome.

DMCA and webcasting
Last year I arranged with my college radio station and ITS department to webcast the radiostation using icecast. The webcast has been a wonderful success so far. My problem now is not technical, but political. A few days ago I recieved the following message from the station director: ================================================================== hey josh, i talked to [faculty advisor]

Xen License
Hi Everyone, This is going to sound silly but... I''m just off the phone with a Microsoft SPLA reseller. They sell licenses to run Microsoft software in a hosted environment. I was asking about obtaining Windows licenses to run on my Xen VPS hosting solution. Maybe there is a big misunderstanding, but I''m faily sure she said that it was illegial for me to rent out Xen
