Drive problem
...rsync'ing data from one system to another, and the recipient suddenly started throwing DRDY errors. Now, it's a fairly new WD Red 3TB, and I'd think it was just a bad drive... but I'm really confused by this, from the logs: Jun 15 15:34:43 <servername> kernel: ata3: SError: { Dispar } Dispar? And googling, every reference I find to that word always has something else there. System's running 5.11. Filesystem's xfs. Any thoughts? mark

Disparity in listing files and searching
Hello All, I have a minor issue that is vexing me. Here is some important information... The server is running Red Hat 7.2, with EXT3FS for the underlying file system and Samba 2.4.STABLE7 and is acting as a PDC. The system has far more RAM, CPU Power and Hard drive space then is really needed. So, I doubt the issue I am experiencing is related to hardware issues. I believe that

Deleting columns where the frequency of values are too disparate
Hello R-help community, I have another question about filtering datasets. Please consider the following "toy" data matrix example, called "x" for simplicity. There are 20 different individuals ("ID"), with information about the alleles (A,T, G, C) at six different loci ("Locus1" - "Locus6") for each of these 20 individuals. At any single locus

du vs df size difference
...ith du saying 8G used and df saying 20G used. # du -hcx / 8.0G total # df -h / Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on /dev/xvda3 22G 20G 637M 97% / I recognize that in most cases du and df are not going to report the same but I am concerned about having a 12GB disparity. Does anyone have any thoughts about this or reason as to why there is a big difference? I have read a few articles online about it and none have really shown such a large difference. Help understanding rsync and cwrsync
...ad an interesting post from a developer that mentions cwrsync is a minimalistic rsync and thus things like permissions are not transfered, the post was from 2004. Here are my questions Windows (cw)Rsync Client --> Linux Rsync server 1) Should we abandon cwrsync for cygwin + rsync? Have the disparities between the two versions been resolved? 2) What are the risks with using cwrsync (we want a limited footprint on the client)? 3) Assuming we use straight cygwin + rsync how does the linux rsync server handle the permissions and ACL's of an NTFS files system? Are they restorable back t...

Volume of patches for CentOS vs Fedora
...solutely insane. CentOS is a smaller distro, but not that much smaller. Also, I understand that CentOS's parent distro (from a prominent North American Linux Distributor) is supposed to be better tested before release than Fedora. But still, there must be some other factor to explain the disparity. Like CentOS only releasing a patch for security problems and not bug fixes or something like that. Could someone enlighten me? Thanks, Steve Bergman

LARTC Wiki
Hi all, Since the mail list receives a lot of repeated subjects (for example: "i have two adsl lines..."), maybe these specific issues should be treated on the LARTC Guide, or maybe if we had an wiki? Is there a LARTC Wiki? If not, what do you think about creating one? Thanks -- Marco _______________________________________________ LARTC mailing list LARTC@mailman.ds9a.nl

KVM as a desktop
I am nearing the end of a project that moved our disparate services and hosts onto kvm virtualized servers. What I am now contemplating is setting up my desktop as a virtual host and using one of the guests as my primary workstation. However, I am not sure how this would work in practice. I am accustomed to working with virtual instances via ssh (a t...

question on jitter in plot.Predict in rms
...ted some data that reflect what I'm working with. The model predicts a continuous variable with an ordinal score, a two-level group, and a continuous covariate. Of primary interest is a plot of the group by score interaction, where the score is the ordinal variable, and the group Ns are quite disparate. When I produce the plot for the predicted values with the data=llist argument, as expected I get datadensity hatch marks. However, in the group with the smaller N, I get jittered datadensity points, while in the group with the larger N, the jitter apparently defaults to single vertical lines,...

R/octave/matlab etc.
...good in this comparison. I suspect Ubuntu has a rather low optimization level or similar for octave. As Jean G. has indicated, tests may measure the wrong sorts of things. Nonetheless, there is a value -- they can help us check that builds have been done with the right setup. And if we get very disparate performance on machines of supposedly similar capability, we may need to look into the awful details. JN
