Update -- Username to SID translation on Security Tab
Below is a message I sent out on Friday.. I've noticed something even stranger now-- if I attempt to remove the SID from the permissions window and hit "Apply" it dissappears for a moment and comes right back. Also, If I remove it, then manually add myself to the permissions file, it shows up fine, but after I hit Apply, it goes back to the SID. So I have two problems here,

addendum to syslinux/ tftp-hpa docs
After a few days of troubleshooting, we finally determined why we were having problems. It seems as though the tftp-hpa daemon requires the MTU of the interface it's running on to be >= 1500. We had the MTU set at 1400 (don't ask why) and the PXE client was receiving fragmented packets and failing. As soon as we set it to over 1500, it worked fine. hpa, Could you please update

feature request
I don't know if this is the place to make this suggestion, but: The way pxelinux works, when a box comes up, it gets its dhcp address, then downloads the kernel and initrd. Then the network card is initialized again by its module. This causes a problem because the link goes down when the NIC is initialized by the module. It takes about 30 seconds or so for our switches to negotiate a

booting CD using memdisk
I'm wondering if it is possible to use memdisk to boot a CD image over the network (using pxelinux) as it is using a floppy or hd image. Anyone tried this? James

odd pxelinux/tftp-hpa problem
I haven't encountered this problem before. This is from a Compaq DL320, with Intel Boot Agent 4.0.17 and tftp-hpa-0.28 running on Solaris. The PXE stack gets its IP address just fine, but it times out on the TFTP. While snooping on the Solaris box and grepping for TFTP, I found that the box gets one block of the TFTP transfer just fine. smbclient works, mount does not
For some stranger reason, I am able to authenticate to my samba server from a Linux client using smbclient //10.1.1.1/stuff -U smbuser I'm also able to map a drive from a Win2K machine. however if I try to : mount -t smbfs -o user=smbuser, password=doh //10.209.81.38/stuff /mnt I get the following error: 7321: session setup failed: ERRSRV - ERRbadpw (Bad password - name/password pair in

winbindd ping failing
I've followed the steps on http://us4.samba.org/samba/docs/man/winbind.html for setting up winbind. I was able to add my machine to the domain as specified using smbpasswd (though I did not do it using the AD tool on Windows, do I need to?), the smbpasswd cmd said it joined successfully. I verified that the machine account was created on the AD. I then restarted smb, and started

problem changing permissions
Whenever I try to add or remove a user for access to a file I get the following error: "Unable to save permission change on <filename>. Access is denied". I took a look at my smbd log file and found this: [2002/08/29 10:40:00, 5] smbd/posix_acls.c:unpack_nt_owners(433) unpack_nt_owners: validating owner_sids. samba as a block device
Netapp (a CIFS/NFS NAS solution) has the ability to emulate a physical device and present itself as a local drive to a Windows box over the network. It involves a Windows client side driver as well as some server side stuff to do this. To Windows, the drive appears to be local and not a mapped drive (you can format it/etc) Are there any initiatives to do something like this with Samba?

problems with tftp-hpa timing out.
I'm difficulty diagnosing a tftp-hpa problem. Specfically, when performing a PXE boot, the machine hangs at the "TFTP...." and times out. This is only occuring at one network location (we'll call it network A). Now on network B, the computers on network can tftp boot no problem. If I run a tftp client from my workstation to connect to the tftp-hpa server on network A, I can
