Memory problems with CentOS box
...lt. It never reboots again until I find and remove a now defective DIMM. That DIMM can never be used again because it is out of order. This just happened for the *fourth* time and is costing me a lot of hassle and perhaps expense if the manufacturer does not replace the DIMM freely. The memory is DDR400 ECC from Kingston and of the type recommended by the motherboard's manufacturer. The board is a Tyan Tomcat i875p (S5102). Would it be possible that the DIMMs are being destroyed by some software component from the OS, perhaps the I2C management? The DIMMs do have EPROMS... Are they being inco...

Problems building R 2.2.1 with libgoto and SSE2 enabled
Hi, I am trying to build R 2.2.1 with Kazushige Goto's BLAS library (libgoto) and encountered a problem: I have two computers with the almost identical hardware (P4 Northwood CPU, i875 chipset, 2GB DDR400 RAM) and identical Linux OS. I have the latest version of libgoto for this CPU installed on both boxes (libgoto_northwood32p-r1.00.so) and I am using gcc compiler flags "-O2 -march=pentium4 -mfpmath=sse -msse2" to enable use of SSE2 extensions. With one computer that works perfectly,...

Problems w/ CentOS 4.4 ....
.... I just installed CentOS 4.4 yesterday P.M., on my 2.4 GHz P4 box, Foxconn i865 mbd, 2 GB DDR400 RAM (4 X 512 MB), 1 X 20 GB HDD (hda), 1 X 160 GB HDD (hdb), 1 X LG GSA H22N DVD reader/burner (hdc), 1 X 400 GB HDD (hdd), Coolmax CP500-T PSU. EXT2 vs. EXT3: mount w/sync or fdatasync
My application always needs to sync file data after writing. I don't want anything handing around in the kernel buffers. I am wondering what is the best method to accomplish this. 1. Do I use EXT2 and use fdatasync() or fsync()? 2. Do I use EXT2 and mount with the "sync" option? 3. Do I use EXT2 and use the O_DIRECT flag on open()? 4. Do I use EXT3 in full journaled mode,

x86_64 and memory reservation
Hi, I have an Athlon 64 2800+ with an ASUS K8V-MX mATX motherboard. 2x512 MB DDR400 Ram. Now the problem: 8MB of RAM is used by the shared memory of the video card, so I would expect 1016MB RAM to be available for Linux (that's how much the BIOS shows). Indeed if I go into memtest86+ v1.50 then I see: in e820-Std mode: 1015MB ram, with 432K reserved in e820-All mode: 1016MB...

Opteron Mobo Suggestions
I've been planning to build a dual Opteron server for awhile. I'd like to get people's suggestions on a suitable motherboard. I've looked at the Tyan K8SE (S2892) and K8SRE (S2891) but would like to find more Linux-specific experiences with these boards. Some features I expect are at least 4 SATA (SATA-300?) ports, serial console support in the BIOS, USB 2.0 and IEEE-1394

ZFS Inexpensive SATA Whitebox
All, So I have started working with Solaris 10 at work a bit (I''m a Linux guy by trade) and I have a dying nfs box at home. So the long and short of it is as follows: I would like to setup a SATAII whitebox that uses ZFS as its filesystem. The box will probably be very lightly used, streaming media to my laptop and workstation would be the bulk of the work. However I do have quite a

Debian Sarge XEN dom0 with Linux Root Raid and LVM Hardware: P4 3.2ghz LG775 Asus P5GD1-VM 1gb DDR400 DRAM 2x80gb Seagate SATA disks Reasons for using software raid (over Intel ICH raid or more expensive SCSI raid) 1. Speed Bonnie++ shows Linux Software Raid is MUCH faster than ICH5 (at least under Linux) 2. Reliability I have observed that frequent disk access with small files has...
