WINS/LMHOST
...X
servers are running PTC's pdm databases and the NT clients (all having
static IP address) are running the pdm client and the UNIX server is looking
the DNS server for name resolution. The implementation of WINS should not
come into play with regards to my current working environment.
I'm comtemplating with the option of requesting them to simply using the
lmhost file to reference the machines in my department. Am I looking at the
right direction, is there any pitfall I should be aware of?
Thanks for any input.

Samba 2.2.x -- which is best for printing?
...s.. needing access simply for UNIX
file systems AND printers served from the Samba server. NOTHing fancy.
My biggest concern is that I want the printer access to be most stable.
I probably don't/won't need to take advantage of any fancier features
that Samba has. So, to repeat, I am just comtemplating the best release for
file serving and print serving ability.
2.2.4? 2.2.5? 2.2.6?
Thanks for the help!

samba, winbind and pam

it works just fine but the problem that I'm having is that in the home directory I end up having tons of user homes but they've never logged into this linux system.
have you experienced this, any solutions, ideas?
thank you.

Use of cfortran.h?
I'm planning to try to use Mike Powell's new BOBYQA optimization routine
to see if it is a good candidate to eventually replace Nelder-Mead as the
optim() default. (Don't panic -- this won't happen quickly.) Mike writes
f77 code. After some chasing about, I've realized that because
optimization codes need to call the objective function written in R, they
need to use a language
