make stops in bind's compilation
Hi, Brand-new installation of FreeBSD 4.8 + 'make world', including updating ports, sources, crypt/secure sources and everything. When trying to compile bind8 from ports, this is the error that get reported: ===> Building for bind-8.3.6 Using .systype Using .settings /var/tmp/usr/ports/net/bind8/work/src/include /var/tmp/usr/ports/net/bind8/work/src/include/arpa /var/tmp/usr/ports/net/bind8/work/src/include/isc /var/tmp/usr/ports/net/bind8/work/src/...

Processing "BIND8-like" statistics
I wonder how to process the statistics logged by nsd. We compile with --enable-bind8-stats and I thought we would be able to reuse the Perl script that translated our BIND8 statistics to MRTG. But the script has problems, probably because nsd has several daemons, not just one, and each one is logging statistics. Aug 4 10:34:01 ns2 nsd[24573]: NSTATS 1059986041 1059979224 A=29225...

Problem with bind8 and ports
Hi When I install bind8 through ports it doesn't create the dir named 'namedb' and the needed files that it's supposed to do according to the handbook. Has anyother experienced this?

BIND 8 is EOL as of 27 August 2008 (fwd)
...of the notice below from ISC. Given that we have moved to BIND 9 for all of our releases from 5.x on (and BIND 9.4.x in 7-soon-to-be-release), and given that FreeBSD 4 was the last branch to have BIND 8, and itself is now EOL, the time has come to say good-bye to BIND 8. I will be marking the bind8 (BIND 8.3.7) port FORBIDDEN since it contains the predictable query ID bug. I will also update the bind84 (currently BIND 8.4.7) port to 8.4.7-P1, and mark that port DEPRECATED with an EXPIRATION_DATE 3 months in the future. Users who have heavily loaded BIND 8 installations and are concerned a...

Named update for RH 4.2 exploitable?
Someone I was speaking with this evening claimed they have installed the latest named rpms yet they are still getting exploited daily and being hacked. Do the latest rpm''s for the named 4.9.x stuff fix all the root exploits or is this person just an idiot who probably has holes elsewhere in the system?

...et, so I have been searching my records and found it! All that setting 'auth-nxdomain = yes' does, it sets the nameserver to be authoritative for non existing domains, it has nothing to do with being authoritative for a dns domain. It used to default to 'yes' for compatibility with Bind8, it now defaults to no. Rowland

Another way to transfer zones
Hi, I've been working on a replacement for nsd-xfer/bind-xfer for the use with NSD for some evenings now, and since I believe that at least some of you do have the same problem I experienced during my transition to NSD (that is, bind-xfer is only available in BIND8, which is sometimes a little bit peeky in being compiled, plus the many invokations of that program during the regular update are slow as hell) I decided to publish it. Perhaps it is of some use to you. It basically accepts data in the nsd.zones format from STDIN and tries to check/transfer an...

Forward lookup DNS Issues samba 4.1.12-9 el6
Hi guys, I know this sounds vague and I'll try to explain in more depth now, but firstly, does Samba4 internal DNS, cache any records that were looked up from a forwarder, and then secondly what is the default timeout for waiting for a DNS lookup off of a DNS forwarder? I've installed two new Samba4 PDC's(using the built in DNS server and not named) for two separate sites, and both

Error returning browse list: NT_STATUS_ACCESS_DENIED
Andrew, Jerry and the rest of the team: Hello again! It has been quite some time since I was here and waded the waters to set up bind8 and samba 2.07 on my trust mdk 7.2 box. (by the way, it is still working like a champ) over 400 days uptime before the last extended power outage. Well, obviously a lot has changed since the 2.07 days and I am now working on a SuSE 8.2 box with samba 2.2.7a with XP pro clients. So far, all has gone...

/var partition overflow (due to spyware?) in FreeBSD default install
All: I'm posting this to FreeBSD-security (rather than FreeBSD-net) because the problems I'm seeing appear to have been caused by spyware, and because they constitute a possible avenue for denial of service on FreeBSD machines with default installs of the operating system. Several of the FreeBSD machines on our network began to act strangely during the past week. Some have started to
