mktemp
Has this not been changed to mkstemp just for reason of having to change all of the smbd_mktemp() calls, for portability, or some hidden arcana? Are there any platforms that samba supports that don't have mkstemp? -- Blue Lang http://www.gator.net/~blue Unix Administrator Veritas Software 2315 McMullan Circle, Raleigh, North Carolina, USA 919 835...

VP3/QT: A new kdxlqt_CodecVersion patch
...no way for an application to identify them. And since the older 3.2.1.x and 3.2.2.x installers will actually *downgrade* the installed version of VP3, it would be nice if an application could warn the user. The attached patch increments kdxlqt_CodecVersion (and documents all the Component Manager arcana involved). This version can be retrieved using the Component Manager. I've also attached a HACKING.txt file which can go in Codecs/quicktime/. This file describes (for now) all the different version numbers I've found in the VP3 QuickTime codecs, and how to increment them correctly. Han...

LVM hatred, was Re: /boot on a separate partition?
...promoting the wholesomeness of apple-pie this sort of moralizing really brooks no answer. You can guess my opinion on that line of puritanism. As you have painfully discovered, infrequently used utilities and commands are difficult to deal with. The process of learning, or relearning, the correct arcana is particularly noisome given the notorious inconsistency of syntaxes across different utilities and the spotty coverage of up-to-date documentation. Google can be a dangerous guide given the wide variation of practice across differing flavours of *nix and the widespread aversion to providing date...

Fixtures: pluraly bitten
...t is not the case. I can''t remember how many places in the Rails codebase I''ve seen where class names and table names are converted into each other. Unfortunately, not with the help of two specific methods, which could rely on a mapping table, but by manipulating the syntactic arcana of the english language. What to do about this? The only solution I can imagine right now consists of these pieces - Funnel each and every conversion between singular and plural as well as class name and table name through centralized methods. - Add table-based conversion that gets priority ov...

RFC: Markdown Table Syntax
...like tables to look in plain text, given how often I've created them in code documentation, and how often I look at them in terminal-based database clients. I like what I've come up with, drawing as it does on solid prior art, and would appreciate those who take an interest in such arcana taking a look. Again, I appreciate how friendly and willing the folks have been on this list, especially to a presumptuous n00b like myself, and hope to continue to contribute to that for a long time. Best, David

Rshaper Weirdness
Hello, guys, I am trying to get rshaper 2.01 to work on our Redhat 6.2 servers, but it does not seem to be able to control the bandwidth usage, here are the details, 1. Our production servers are all Redhat 6.2 with Kernel 2.2.19-6.2.12, the software we use are customized specifically for RH6.2, so I can''t upgrade to 2.4 kernel. 2. On my test server with the same RH6.2 and kernel (it has

simple TOS based setup vs more complex ones
Hi, After reading section 9 of LARTC it seemed to me that a pure TOS based QoS setup with be sufficient for a small newtork. Interactive packets could have the highest priority, second highest for DNS and small HTTP packets and lowest prio for all others. The advantage is that, the setup would be simply a couple of iptables lines, because the default pfifo_fast qdisc already implements

xferlog not rotating.
I am not sure how to correctly troubleshoot this. I just noticed that my /var/log/xferlog file is huge. There are no files in /etc/logrotate.d/ for xferlog. This is what leads me to believe that it isnot rotating. Or perhaps I do not have it set to rotate. I am not sure. I am running CentOS release 5 (Final). Can someone tell me what I, apparently, do not have configured correctly. Thank

simple loop(?) analysing subsets
Hi All, I have a large data set with many columns of data. One of these columns is a species identifier and the remainder are variables such as temperature or mass. Currently I am carrying out a single regression on subsets of the data set, e.g. separated data sets with only the data from one species at a time. I have been searching for a thread that will help me to understand how best to repeat

This is kind of a chicken-and-egg problem, and I don''t anticipate finding a better solution than the static definition. Thanks, good bye, and an observation from a newbie.
CentOS mailing list, Thank you all for answering my questions and being so supportive over the last few months as I was running CentOS on my home machine. I have switched over to Ubuntu, and I will be devoting my learning efforts to that distribution from this point on. However, while I'm sure a new distribution will have the inevitable learning curve, a lot of the tips and tricks I

Postfix setup
Dear All I am planning to setup mail server for my domain. Which one is preferred postfix or sendmail. I came across a link * http://ostechnix.wordpress.com/2013/02/08/setup-mail-server-using-postfixdovecotsquirrelmail-in-centosrhelscientific-linux-6-3-step-by-step/ * for postfix mail setup. It says, Prerequisites: - The mail server should contain a valid MX record in the DNS server.
