Both Rocky Linux and AlmaLinux are in a very comfortable position, and they will likely stay that way. my predict is that they will continue as a #rebuilder / #freeloader, writing software is a hard work. Samba AD Authentication Issues After Update
Thank you. While I'm currently in the process of migrating to AlmaLinux 8 via an in-place upgrade, I initially wanted to update the base packages on CentOS 7 before proceeding. However, given the circumstances, it seems deploying a separate AlmaLinux machine for testing might be the most efficient approach to troubleshooting the issue. If the problem persists on a fre...

Current RHEL fragmentation landscape
...ange in the coming years and how it affects Red Hat/IBM and the Linux users in general. RHEL ("The Original", quasi Gold standard until June 2023) CentOS Stream (rolling RHEL next) Oracle Linux (almost 1:1 rebuild with own patches, adds own packages) Rocky Linux (tries to be 1:1 rebuild) AlmaLinux (ABI compatible rebuild) EuroLinux (status unknown) Springdale Linux (status unknown) Navy Linux (status unknown) SUSE RHEL fork (status unknown) For me it's clear that RHEL and certain clones/forks are here to stay. Large enterprises or institutions like CERN and Fermilab will continue to use...

Dear All! (As I wrote earlier) I'm working on removing an ancient (3.2.5) SaMBa member server from an Active Directory domain, and replacing it with SaMBa 4.16.4 running on AlmaLinux 9. The domain controllers are Windows servers, and the old SaMBa is joined to the domain with "security = domain" type of security (the old NT4 type). I'm afraid once I remove the old server from the domain, there is now way back for it, however it will have to be removed, since the...

Compilation problems with R4.4.0
I'm having a strange problem compiling R4.4.0 on an AlmaLinux9 box. I've compiled previous versions OK on the same hardware/software (last was R4.3.2) but 4.4.0 is repeatedly failing. Configuration works OK. ./configure --prefix=/bi/apps/R/4.4.0 --enable-R-shlib R is now configured for x86_64-pc-linux-gnu Source directory: . Installati...

[libnbd PATCH] golang: Bump minimum Go version to 1.17
...to use unsafe.Slice(), which in turn allows us to write a simpler conversion from a C array to a Go object during callbacks. To check if this makes sense, look at https://repology.org/project/go/versions compared to our list in ci/manifest.yml, at the time I made this commit: Alpine 3.15: 1.17.10 AlmaLinux 8: 1.19.10 CentOS Stream 8: 1.20.4 Debian 10: 1.11.6 Debian 11: 1.15.15 (mainline), 1.19.8 (backports) Debian 12: 1.19.8 Fedoar 36: 1.19.8 FreeBSD Ports: 1.20.7 OpenSUSE Leap 15.3: 1.16.3 OpenSUSE Leap 15.4: 1.18.1 Ubuntu 18.04: 1.18.1 We previously required a minimum of 1.13 for module support, w...
