Full-text Search Options Redux
Hey all,
I haven''t heard much on the list in a while re: ActiveSearch, Ferret,
Hyper Estraier, etc. in a while.
Has anyone successfully used ActiveSearch on tables with rows in the
order of hundreds of thousands, if not millions?
(in our case, each row containing anywhere from a paragraph of text to
many pages)
Here''s some background on our search eff...

Active Search
Issue:
I am trying to get a good quality search capability across our site. I
ran across ActiveSearch
(http://julik.textdriven.com/svn/tools/rails_plugins/simple_search/)
which seems to be a better solution for us than SimpleSearch (and
SearchGenerator) as it is more than just word based. However, I am
unable to get the project built and being fairly new to Ruby / Rails I''m
a little at a l...

How to install Ferret to get the best performance
Hey all,
After dabbling with ActiveSearch, we''re coming back around to take
another look at Ferret.
ActiveSearch slowed to a crawl after indexing about 20k documents, each
20 lines each.
This time we may attempt to create multiple Ferret indexes (isolating
each organization''s data individually), since we eventually c...

Impact of inheriting controllers on models
...icArea Controller
--\
........
At the deepest level the class definition looks like:
class Admin::Content::PagesController < Admin::ContentController
Now, for some reason this has just started to cause problems when trying
to use one of the search plugins available (specifically I have tried
ActiveSearch and Acts_as_ferret). For some reason when trying to trigger
a CRUD action on a model which has acts_as_ferret or indexes_columns
specified on it, I get a name error: uninitialized constant Page
One thing which stands out is the file that was supposed to be loaded:
This error occured while loadin...

Making sense of all the search options
...ch isn''t supported in that fashion. This all ends
up looking pretty ugly in the code.
So, on to some gems and other add-ons.
* Ferret looks awesome, but overkill for this purpose.
* SearchGenerator might do it, but all I need is a finder to feed a
collection, not views and layouts.
* ActiveSearch looks like the thing, but I''ve heard little about it,
so I''m not sure it''s still valid.
I''ll play with all of these to get a feel, but if anyone has any
thoughts on the best way to search through a table full of name and
title data, I''d love to hear the...

text search engine ?
Hi there,
What are you using for text search engine in your rails applications ?
I have been using simple search for simple applications, but then I
need to search text in model instances inside collections such as
user.documents and the like. I believe that simple search does not
support any sort of ranged queries, and sql like might be overkill for
tables with lots of records.

Advanced search/filter use cases
I''ve been working on an application lately that has a lot of advanced
search and filtering functionality (with ranges and substring searches
for each attribute). Despite being a pretty common use case, this isn''t
supported particularly well by any framework I''ve used, including Rails.
I''d like to fix that. :)
Right now, my major pet peeves are:

innodb vs myisam
Hi,
I have been using myisam tables in mysql with rails because my client will soon want fulltext searchable content, however when I migrated my development db from schema.rb all of the tables generated were innodb. I understand that I can override this, but also like the transactions and foreign keys of innodb. So 2 questions really:
1. are transactions in activerecord dependent on innodb or do

ANN: acts_as_ferret
Hi all
This week I have worked with Rails and Ferret to test Ferrets (and Lucenes)
capabilities. I decided to make a mixin for ActiveRecord as it seemed the
simplest possible solution and I ended up making this into a plugin.
For more info on Ferret see:
http://ferret.davebalmain.com/trac/
The plugin is functional but could easily be refined. Anyway I want to share it
with you. Regard it as a
