(Missed this earlier as the conversation moved off-list.)
And to keep the list abreast, this appears to be related to the long double
issue on powerpc where needed an extra #define to ensure compilation. That
commit is the difference in a bisection as I was able to demonstrate. The
issue can also be circumvented by disabling long double support on the
platform, but hopefully a better...

Gnumeric - 1 Excel - ?
...f. McCullough (who
references Prof. Ripley's 1990 PRNG paper) indicates in this article
that the Gnumeric team has incorporated the Mersenne Twister to a beta
version of Gnumeric, which may already have been released by now. This
modification ameliorates this concern.
For those wishing to stay abreast of such issues, this new paper may be
of interest. It puts the open source efforts of the Gnumeric team

Error in rep(formals(f), n) : replication of pairlists is defunct
The message suggests that the change was intentional.
Why was this functionality

CentOSPlus Kernel for 586?
...).
I need some of the features in CentOSPlus kernels for my 586 (K6-III).
1) I don't mind doing it myself and contributing results, if that's what
it takes. Only having LFS experience (rpm nu2me), I anticipate a
"learning curve" and a minimal amount of hand holding. Since I keep
abreast of the lists, know how to Google the list, have heavy
development background and *light* and *ancient* admin (but for my
little nook here), ... (you get it) hand-holding should be very little.
2) My target machine has a minimal (mostly) CentOS 4.3 kept up-to-date
and plenty of HD. Also have a 2.2P...

sqlite3 and rspec_on_rails tests
As I think I previously mentioned, there is an incompatibility with
rails 1.2.1 and sqlite3 3.3.8.
see: http://weblog.rubyonrails.org/2007/1/29/using-sqlite3-with-rails
and: http://weblog.rubyonrails.org/2007/2/6/rails-1-2-2-sqlite3-gems-
singular-resources
Sqlite is now at 3.3.13.
Because of this, if a developer is trying to create a patch for
rspec_on_rails, he will have one of the

k-means clustering
Dear list, first apologies for this is not strictly an R question but
a theoretical one.
I have read that use of k-means clustering assumes sphericity of data
distribution. Can anyone explain me what this means? My statistical
background is too poor. Is it another kind of distribution, like
gaussian or binomial? What does it happen if the distribution is not
spherical? Could you give me an

R 4.0.0 build error with sysdata.rda on ppc64el architecture
The R 4.0.0 package migration on Debian is being held back by a failed build
on ppc64el [1]. We can see from the history of builds logs [2] that it used
to build, briefly failed, worked again and then failed leading to R 4.0.0's
release. (And my bad for missing how the alpha1/alpha2/beta/rc builds failed.)
I have however neither changed anything, nor did I ever have to accomodate

It was disconcerting to find the Official HowTo,

Samba 3.5. Much other documentation (both online and Using Samba, 3rd

CentOS-4.4 - Some major changes on the way
I would like to take the time to inform people that CentOS-4.4 will
contain some major changes. The changes are significant enough that I
would like to spell out some of them now, probably at least a month
before the release of the upstream "EL4 update 4" is released.
The Mozilla Suite (Browser, Mail, Chat clients) will be replaced by
SeaMonkey. This is due to Mozilla's change in
