in your estimate. First of all my beloved 3ware finally seems to have
passed away. After multiple acquisitions and becoming part of LSI and
getting bought with LSI, it probably became non operational. Namely, the
latest 3ware cards have ancient firmware. Neither of them supports 4kn
drives. This speaks for itself for me. [Under new ownership] LSI, though
still having new controllers released, and one of their MegaRAID
controllers (at least) having support for 4kn drives, still may not last
long (just my feeling, I'd like to hear yours). So, what RAID controllers

OT: hardware: MegaCli and initializing a RAID
Got a new box I'm trying to set up. I configured the RAID from the
firmware, but "fast initialize" was sitting there at 0% (it's about 43 or
45TB). The first time I tried this, I said background, and rebooted the
system.
And the stupid annoying alarm started up as the system came up.
This time, having *finally* figured out how to set up hot spares from the
WebBIOS, I suspended

Recommendation for home NAS external JBOD
Hi,
my oi151 based home NAS is approaching a frightening "drive space" level. Right now the data volume is a 4*1TB Raid-Z1, 3 1/2" local disks individually connected to an 8 port LSI 6Gbit controller.
So I can either exchange the disks one by one with autoexpand, use 2-4 TB disks and be happy. This was my original approach. However I am totally unclear about the 512b vs 4Kb issue.

OT: AF 4k sector drives with 512 emulation
Still have good quality older sata hardware raid cards that require 512
bytes/sector. As far as I know HD manufacturers are not making native 512
bytes/sector drives any more.
Some have better 512e emulation than others. Looking for some advice on
which to avoid and which are recommended. Thanks. PS this is for a CentOS6
server.

...bout)?
Do you mean that *syslinux.efi* does not support (yet) "4k" devices?
Incidentally...
Quote from http://savannah.gnu.org/bugs/?46700#comment22 :
Well, there is apparently some bug (or at least incorrect assumption)
on GRUB side. Pity, it is the first known case of BIOS supporting 4Kn
disks.
TIA,
Ady.

512n drives still exist, although they tend to be a bit smaller, 2TB or less.

4Kn drives are appearing now also. I don't expect these drives to be
bootable except possibly by systems with UEFI firmware. It's also
possible hardware RAID will reject them unless explicitly supported.

I don't believe that is correct. LSI acquired 3ware, and Avago acquired
LSI. So, Avago owns the 3ware and LSI technology, but Adaptec and Areca
are still competitors.

I too noticed that HGST (now owned by WD) makes native 512n drives. That
pdf states that they come in 2,3,4 TB models. (A6 in the model # represents
512n). But there are almost no reviews on these HGST native 512n drives
online.
